VI Va'a sent a men's and women's team to the 28km Howe Sound Iron this July, amidst competing teams from California, Oregon, Washington, Alberta and other parts of British Columbia.

Gibsons and the entire Howe Sound area made for one of the most gorgeous race courses, amongst the coastal mountains, islands, beaches and bays.  After a very long wait, summer had recently arrived in the Pacific Northwest and we had to douse ourselves with water a  few times before the race to keep cool. After our warm-up paddle we had a chance for a dip in the ocean before lining up behind the start line. Photos courtesy Jon Brunk www.jonbrunk.com

September 12-13, 2009 marked the Southern California Outrigger Race Association hosting of the 50th Catalina Channel Crossing US Championships outrigger race. Two of our crew members trained for Catalina 2008, but were not able to join our race crews until Catalina 2009. It was the first time our coaches Brent Bagnall and Risa Greenwood travelled down with both a men’s and women’s crew. To celebrate the 20th anniversary since his first Catalina Crossing, for the first time ever, Brent would coach to the island and race back. Risa would do likewise for the return leg.

The GRPC Catalina Crossing project began in March 2008 and was coached by Brent Bagnall and Risa Greenwood. The paddlers who signed on to the project received an education in outrigger canoe paddling. Other than our coaches none of us had had any experience in open water, waves, change races or long distance Iron races.
