Va'a culture

November 14 marked a day we will long remember at the Gorge Rowing and Paddling Club.  Parallel with the Polynesian tradition, the new Mirage OC6 racing canoe was officially recognized as a member of our 'ohana (family). The canoe is blessed, offerings are made to the sea and to the wind and the canoe is introduced and welcomed as Nalowale.

For a unique look into the old Polynesian culture there is an excellent web site located at http://pvs.kcc.hawaii.edu/ created by the Polynesian Voyaging Society.

It has a history of the voyages and lore of the ancient Polynesians.  If you ever wondered how they headed across the Pacific Ocean and actually found their way without GPS, read here.  You will come to understand how complex their knowledge was and how little we 'know' about the world today.

These Traditions Ensure Respect and Harmony in the Boat 
Seat 6: Steersman
The Steersman is in charge of the boat. Responsibility for the crew's safety is of primary importance. Before going out s/he should:
  1. Check that the boat has 2 bailers
  2. Check the rigging is tight, fore and aft plugs are in and there is no puka in the ama or canoe..
  3. Do not take the boat out if you are not sure that your skills are up to safely handling the weathe
